WS23 - Living Willow for the Garden - May 26-27, 2018

In this workshop, students will be able to make their own living willow structure to take home and then plant in the garden! Living structures for the garden include living fences, arches, domes, outdoor living rooms and all manner of sculptural form. Students will be supplied with full length live beautiful rods which they will secure into the ground and then weave the structure. The workshop will start with a PowerPoint presentation on the living willow structure work of the instructor, Bonnie Gale. She will also cover her research into living forms and the work of international artists. Bonnie will then introduce the methods of construction and demonstrate the techniques to students. Students will make a section of living fence in order to become familiar with the techniques. Students will then be making their own individual living arches, approximately two feet deep, four feet wide and up to 7 feet tall. Students will be guided through construction. The arch structure will then be removed and wrapped for the journey home. The materials fee includes the live willow rods, other materials and full instructions for construction and maintenance.

About the Instructor: 

Bonnie Gale has been a traditional willow basketmaker and willow artist for the past 33 years. With degrees from the University of Manchester, MIT and SUNY-ESF, she engages in spatial design and containment. In the last 8 years, she has been building living willow structures.
