W2 - Shaker Oval Boxes - The Basics - July 21-22, 2018

Dates: July 21-22, 2018

Class Times: Sat 9am-5pm; Sun 9am-2:30pm

Instructor: Eric Pintar

Open Studio: Sat 7-9pm

In this workshop we will focus on the construction of a nest of six boxes. Enjoy learning the process by which the Shakers made these wooden vessels more than 150 years ago. Elegant simplicity describes the Shaker design. Each student will make a nest of six boxes from cherry wood. Thin strips of wood are carefully prepared in Michigan and each student carves the “fingers” on one end before soaking them in a hot water bath. The bands are bent in an oval shape and copper tacks are applied to hold each band together. Quarter-sawn cherry tops and bottoms are fitted and held in place by wooden pegs. Simple construction and elegant design makes this project appealing to anyone with an interest. No woodworking experience necessary.

Material Cost: $60
