Class Description:

A theorem painting is an oil and watercolor painting on paper, or creamy velveteen, created by applying paint through the aid of a series of stencils. The concept of Early American Reproduction and history of this technique that was popular in the 1800s will be included in this class. Students will learn the technique in the theoremetrical manner for preparation of the velvet, and learn the process of mixing colors, how to shade, and fine line work. The student will be able to complete a finished picture suitable for framing. A variety of patterns will be available to use which consists primarily of flowers or fruit, often arranged in a bowl or basket – sometimes birds or butterflies. Framing will be taught as well. This course is available for beginning as well as advanced students.

Instructor Biography:

Mary Avery has been a juried member of HSEAD, Inc. since 1996 and a teacher of Early American Decorative Art since 1979 in her private studio. She has exhibited her work at the University of Connecticut Library and Sturbridge Village Museum in Massachusetts where she demonstrated Country Tin Painting as well. She also has done restorative work in country tin, bronze powder stenciling and gold leaf.
