Class Description:

If you want to learn a design process that is spontaneous and intuitive, and does NOT require a pattern, accurate seam allowances or perfect straight seams, then this is the class for you!  Although learning this process may be frustrating and difficult at first, using the log cabin as a foundation makes it easy to get started. Come with a sense of adventure, ready to PLAY and have some FUN! Susan will guide you through the process of working intuitively to create your own unique design for a wall quilt, lap quilt, or a full size top. The only pre-planning required is choosing your fabrics.

Instructor Biography:

Susan Damone Balch is an accomplished quilter, fly fisher and teacher. She has been quilting since 1978 and has exhibited her work and won awards throughout the country. Fly fishing, nature, and her extensive fabric collection provide the inspiration for Susan’s original art quilts. Susan teaches machine techniques such as piecing, applique, and quilting. Whether you are a traditional quilter or looking to push yourself to work more intuitively, Susan can guide you through the process.

Supply List

Students will need to bring:

FABRIC – Bring a collection of at least 15 different cotton fabrics, at least a fat quarter or larger of each fabric. You may incorporate scraps into this project as well. With a color scheme or theme in mind, choose a mix of lights and dark, and prints and/or solids. The more fabric you have to “play” with, the better.

Sewing machine in good working order
Basic sewing supplies
Scissors for cutting fabric
Good quality thread
Rotary Cutter, mat, and ruler(s) (optional) There will be a rotary cutting station for the class to share.
If you only bring one ruler, I recommend a 12” square.
Extension cord (optional)

There will be an ironing board, irons, and design boards provided for your use. There is a lot of ironing involved in this process, so if you have a small table top iron and ironing board, you may want to bring it. Table top lamps are available if needed.

Bring any finished (or unfinished) projects you would like to share with the group.
