Country classic meets contemporary chic in this class! Students will learn to weave a strong, colorful seat of up-cycled neckties onto a ladder-back style chair. All participants will leave class with at least one unique chair for their home, or to use as gift. A chair with a necktie seat makes a great conversation piece!
You will be able to make a necktie seat for an adult size chair in this fun class. Only basic sewing skills are needed! Find a sturdy, used ladder back chair, remove the old rush seat and paint it if you wish. Another option is to purchase a fully prepped chair from the instructor. You may bring neckties or purchase them in class at minimal cost. Please bring your own sewing machine. The instructor will be in touch with students prior to class regarding chairs. Supply list provided.
Joyce graduated from Skidmore College with a B.S. in Elementary Education and a minor in Art. She has had a lifelong interest in the visual arts and has training in graphic design. In recent years she has developed a fascination with saving old furniture, especially chairs. Joyce honed her skills in chair seating by taking numerous classes with Sandy Sherman, learning caning, fiber rush, and Shaker tape. Necktie chair seats combine her interest in color with creative uses for cast-off items. Joyce is currently the Volunteer Coordinator on the Society of Vermont Artists and Craftsmen, Inc.
