Revamp a country classic and make it a colorful contemporary! In this class, students will take a ladder-back style chair with the rush seat removed, and replace it with a strong, beautiful seat woven of up-cycled neckties. All participants will leave class with at least one unique chair for their home, or to use as gift. A chair with a necktie seat makes a great conversation piece! Come for a day and make a seat for a child’s rocker. Come for two or three days and complete a seat for a regular size chair or two. Only basic sewing skills are needed! Each student should bring their own sewing machine. Child size rockers and regular size chairs may reserved ahead of time and purchased in class, or students may bring chairs ready to use. Neckties will be available to buy at minimal cost. The instructor will be in touch with students prior to class, regarding chairs.
Please note that when a class has a variable number of days available, it is strongly recommended that students all begin on day 1. Instructor permission is required to start on any other day.
NOTE: Tuition includes a $25 one-time registration fee. If you have already paid the fee, it will be deducted from your total before your card is charged.
Joyce graduated from Skidmore College with a B.S. in Elementary Education and a minor in Art. She has had a lifelong interest in the visual arts and has training in graphic design. In recent years she has developed a fascination with saving old furniture through repainting, stenciling and chair seating. Joyce has honed her skills in chair seating by taking numerous classes with Sandy Sherman, learning caning, fiber rush, and Shaker tape. Necktie chair seats combine her interest in well-loved furniture and creative uses for cast-off items. Joyce is the Volunteer Coordinator on the Society’s Board of Directors.
